Principa Discordia by Malaclypse The Younger

The Principa Discordia, by Malaclypse the Younger, is a discordian classic. The book is dedicated to the Prettiest One, a reference to the classic greek tale about Eris, the goddess of Chaos and Discord. It is a difficult book to review, because it is a difficult book to follow. Written in the classic style of discordians, it is complete with humor, fnords, and other secret artwork big toe. And that’s exactly how the Bible of Discordianism should be. Because beneath that layer is the serious worship of Eris, and that is how she works.

The copy I have is a slim paperback with a pink cover, and an introduction by Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst. The introduction includes an account of his experience with Eris, and the categories of chaos magicians- “Maybe you will be a Chaosopher (who delivers commentaries on chaos) or perhaps, instead, a Chaoist (who goes about stirring up chaos) or, perchance, a Knower (who knows better than do do either one)” (page ii). It also explains one of the main tenents of discordianism, that everyone is a Pope. For “Only a Pope may canonize a Saint, but every man, woman and child on this planet is a genuine and authorized Pope (genuine and authorized by the House of the Apostles of Eris). So you can ordain yourself- and anyone or anything else- a Saint” (Page iii). It also explains the concept of Eristic abnormail (the act of sending absurd snail mail to one another and random addresses). Other books and works are mentioned, as well as a comparison of what being a discordian has done for him, and the change it can have on you. Support is given for polyamorists, and greyface is demonized. Requirements of being a discordian are given, as are descriptions of Eristic Avatars, Discordian Episkopos, and laws are given.

Every page has different fonts on it, and graphics to boot. Lots of them are random excerpts, cut and pasted sections, and random quotes, in the style of older zines. On page 00001 is a description of the DISCORDIAN SOCIETY, and on page 00004, Is the Pentabarf, or the 5 commandments. The birth of the Erisian Movement follows, taking place in the 1950s. Battle hymns, poetry, and other propaganda fill the pages, including articles covering what is known about Eris, The law of Fives, and the Myth of the Apple of Discord, or the Doctrine of the Original Snub.

POEE, or the Paratheo-Anametamystikhood of Eris Esoteric is explained, as well as it’s 5 degrees, as well as direction for its priests, chaplains, and several oaths and rights. Several other societies are included, as well as the POEE calendar and holydays.
